Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that blends unique elements of African origin that developed in Brazil.
The essence of capoeira is continuity—defense turns into attack and attack turns into defense.
This continuity is expressed by using the opponent’s attack and the momentum generated by it to take them off balance in a non-brutal, graceful way.
Capoeira incorporates music with playing and singing. The game is shaped by different rhythms played in the capoeira roda, accompanied by songs that tell capoeira’s story.
Capoeira’s uniqueness lies in the game: it is a meeting between two players rather than opponents; practice is not meant to conduct "combat activity".
The game also includes acrobatics, theatrical and choreographic transitions, dance elements, and stable movements in low positions close to the ground.
Another unique aspect is that the two players need not share the same status—age, gender, weight, level of knowledge and experience, etc. Players can enjoy varied intensity levels, adjust to their partner, and change the game’s character to match the dynamics between them.
Capoeira is played with a smile; during practice, one should seek enjoyment, fulfillment, and personal/educational growth.
